Giusvalla: history and geography of a Ligurian municipality.

History

Giusvalla's history dates back to the eighth century when a Lombard king commissioned the construction of the abbey of San Salvatore di Visiovalla, which today is in the area called "Valla". However, this abbey was destroyed by the "treacherous Saracen people" in the tenth century. Later, the son of the marquis Aleramo of Monferrato erected the new abbey of San Quintino di Spigno Monferrato in Alessandria. This construction was located in a strategic point and helped defend pilgrims and the commercial route between Savona and Acqui Terme.

Giusvalla was included in the Marca Aleramici from the tenth century and then became the property of Del Carretto in 1142. Over the centuries, the territory passed from one family to another, including the Genoese Spinola and Imperiale, and finally the San Martino di Agliè. It was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1738 and followed its fortunes until the Risorgimento.

With Napoleon Bonaparte's Italian Campaign in 1797, the Giusvalla territory entered the Department of Letimbro, with its capital in Savona. Later, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, as established by the Congress of Vienna in 1814, and into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
