Welcome to Giustenice

Hello everyone! Welcome to Giustenice, a beautiful Italian municipality in the province of Savona, in Liguria. Here I will talk about its physical geography, the origins of its name, and its fascinating history.

Physical geography

The territory of Giustenice extends along the Scarincio stream valley and is characterized by the presence of olive groves, vineyards, and wooded areas. If you love nature and hiking, you could reach the summit of Mount Carmo di Loano, Bric Agnellino or Giustenice jug, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley. Furthermore, you could visit the Grotto of the Black Rocks, which, with its 2,250 meters of development, is considered one of the largest caves in Liguria.

The story of Giustenice: geography, origin of the name, and fascinating past.

Origins of the name

The name Giustenice seems to derive from a historical fact related to the Punic Wars between the Carthaginians and the Roman Republic. After being conquered by the Romans, the village was the seat of justice and associated with the designation of "Jus Tenens", meaning "holding justice". Over time, the name underwent various modifications until it reached its current "Giustenice".

History

It is hypothesized that already during the Byzantine Empire, there was a "castrum" in the place where later the medieval fortress of Giustenice was built. In 1047, Henry III the Black granted the Salvatore di Torino canon a vast patrimonial complex, including Giustenice. However, the foundation of the village dates back to 1248, as attested by a deed signed by Bonifacio di Clavesana. Giustenice was also subject to the Abbey of San Pietro in Varatella, the territory of the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia, and the Marquisate of Del Carretto. In 1385, the territory was ceded to the Republic of Genoa.

Giustenice is a municipality that boasts a fascinating and ancient history, with several historical influences that have shaped its form and development up to the present day. I hope that my summary has helped you to get to know this beautiful Ligurian town better. If you ever have the opportunity to pass by here, do not forget to visit the Grotto of the Black Rocks and admire the 360-degree panorama from the summit of Mount Carmo di Loano.
