The Teramo-Giulianova railway: a bit of history
The Teramo-Giulianova railway is one of Italy's many wonders. It is a regional railway that links the city of Teramo with the city of Giulianova, running along the Adriatic railway.
It was built in 1884 and was first opened thanks to the Baccarini Law of 1879. Originally, this infrastructure was supposed to be part of a much larger connection with the cities of Rome and L'Aquila. Unfortunately, this connection was never realized.
Despite the project dating back to 1855 and being studied by the Bourbon government, taken up by Member of Parliament Francesco Sebastiani in the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Italy in 1865, and then in 1873 by MP Settimio Costantini, this connection with Rome through L'Aquila and Rieti became only a dream never realized.
Nevertheless, the Teramo-Giulianova railway is an integral part of the central Italy tourist itineraries, as it winds through the suggestive landscapes of Abruzzo, between mountains, hills, and valleys, offering a breathtaking view of the Adriatic coastline.
Characteristics of the Teramo-Giulianova railway
The Teramo-Giulianova railway is a single-track and DC electric train of 3,000 volts. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) takes care of the integrity of the infrastructure, equipped with Train March Control System and Centralized Traffic Control.
The Central Operating Manager based in Pescara is responsible for the whole line. The Electric Axle Counter Block circulation system allows a maximum speed of about 120 km/h.
The Teramo-Giulianova railway includes a total of eighteen stations and stops, some of which have recently been renovated, improving the service offered to users.
