The history of Gissi

Not much is known about the foundation of the hamlet. However, it is known that Gissi dates back to the 11th-15th centuries and that in the 3rd century BC it was a colony of the Frentani and in the 3rd century BC it became a Roman colony. Throughout its history, Gissi was under the power of several ruling families, such as the Normans, Caldora, and the princes of Capua. The municipality was also the territory of the abbey of Santo Stefano in Rivomare di Casalbordino. In the 17th century, it passed to the d'Avalos family, marquises of Vasto. Until 1799, Gissi was part of a district known as the county of Monteodorisio, then it was included in the district of Vasto and finally in the province of Chieti.
