Ginestra degli Schiavoni: a small town in Campania

Hello everyone! Today I'll take you on a journey to Ginestra degli Schiavoni, a small town located in the province of Benevento, in Campania. With its 412 inhabitants, it is the smallest municipality by population in the entire province. But don't be fooled by its size: here you can find tranquility and discover the ancient history of the place.

Physical geography

Ginestra degli Schiavoni is located in the middle valley of the Miscano, east of the Cuparella valley and west of the Ginestra stream, in the Campanian Apennines. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of hilly landscapes, among woods and green meadows.

Ginestra degli Schiavoni: history and hillside beauty in Campania

History

The history of Ginestra degli Schiavoni dates back to Roman times, when the Via Minucia passed through here, connecting Benevento to Troia. Over the centuries, the center slowly developed around the tower and the defense system. Later, the village was populated by Slavs from Dalmatia, formerly called "Schiavonia", and since then it has been called "Ginestra degli Schiavoni".

The municipality has passed into the hands of various noble families over the years, including the Angevins, Pagano, De Sabran, Sforza and, finally, the Ciaburro, who made it a Barony until 1938. Since 1861, the municipality has been part of the province of Benevento.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite its small size, Ginestra degli Schiavoni offers several interesting attractions. The Mother Church, inaugurated in 1986, stands on the site of the ancient church of Santa Maria dell'Assunzione. It has a circular floor plan, with an umbrella roof, and preserves the miraculous painting of Saint Anthony, a copy of the original which was burned in 1924.

The Chapel of St. Anthony, instead, is another must-see destination. Originally dedicated to San Martino, it has recently been restored together with the dam in front of it. It is located outside the city walls and may have been a reference point for ancient roads.

Conclusions

And so, our visit to Ginestra degli Schiavoni comes to an end. I have taken you on a journey to a municipality with reduced dimensions but hiding many beauties, from ancient history to the beauty of landscapes. A perfect place for those who want to relax and discover the history of our country. Until the next adventure!
