Discover the beauty of Giave's territory
Hills and Pedra Mendalza
Giave's territory is characterized by pronounced hills, among which stands the famous "Pedra Mendalza", an imposing isolated boulder that emerges on the plain, from the suggestive valley of nuraghi to the northeast and Campu Giavesu to the southwest. The Pedra Mendalza is the result of an ancient volcanic duct that resurfaced thanks to erosion, and is a spectacular work of nature.
Itineraries and cultural testimonies
Thanks to the rediscovery of pastoral culture, several itineraries marked by Pinnetta, traditional cone-shaped dwellings used by shepherds and built dry with small stone slabs, are available. In addition, there are numerous "domus de janas" dating back to the Late Neolithic, including that of Riu Mulinu, and the monuments of the Nuragic civilization of the Bronze Age, such as the famous nuraghe Oes.
A brief history of Giave
Giave has a long history that starts from prehistoric times thanks to the fertility of its soils, where numerous testimonies of the megalithic civilization have been found. The first historical documents concerning the village we know today in its current location date back to the Punic period. The name Giave derives from the toponym "Hafa", a late Carthaginian settlement further downstream from the current site. Later, it was the Romans who were the first foreign people to settle in this territory, creating the bifurcation of the road that connected Caralis (Cagliari) to Turris and Olbia. During the Middle Ages, Giave was part of the Giudicato of Torres and the curatorship of Capuabbas, later becoming part of the possessions of the Doria. With the arrival of the Aragonese, there were clashes between the Doria and them, including the Battle of Aidu de Turdu, which led Giave to become part of the Giudicato of Arborea and later of the Kingdom of Sardinia. During those years, the people of Giave were subjected to a strong system of feudal oppression, with corvée and tithes imposed on the population.
