If you are looking for a small place rich in treasures, then Giarole could be the perfect destination for you. This idyllic town of 685 inhabitants is located just 15 km southeast of Casale Monferrato and was named after the Latin word "glarea," which means "gravel". In this article, we will take you on a discovery of its history and its most important monuments.

Origin of the name

As we mentioned earlier, Giarole takes its name from the Latin word "glarea," which means "gravel". In Piedmontese dialect, it is pronounced "giàra" or "geriola".

Giarole: treasures and history of an enchanted municipality.

History

The town of Giarole boasts a long and diverse history. Its coat of arms and banner were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on January 19, 1976. The coat of arms depicts a golden cornucopia filled with silver fruits on a green background, accompanied in the upper left corner by a mullioned tower, also in silver. The banner is a white and yellow split.

Monuments and places of interest

Architecture and history enthusiasts will find several hidden treasures to discover in Giarole. Among these is the castle of the counts Sannazzaro, built by Federico Barbarossa in the 12th century. This castle was transformed into a country residence in 1854 in neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance style. It still retains important underground spaces and is surrounded by a beautiful park with a chapel that houses a Moncalvo altarpiece. The manor is part of the "Open Castles" system of Lower Piedmont and offers guided tours and stays for visitors who want to take a look at the history of this enchanted place.

Another attraction is the church of San Pietro Apostolo, built between 1836 and 1840 in place of the previous church of San Sebastiano. The church, with its imposing facade and ornate interiors, is an example of 19th-century religious architecture.

Society

The population of Giarole has undergone changes over the years. However, thanks to its strategic location and the beauty of the surrounding territory, the town has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists.
