Giano Vetusto

The Beauty of Giano Vetusto

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Giano Vetusto, a small town in the province of Caserta in Campania. Giano Vetusto has a population of about 654 inhabitants and is located at the foot of Monte Maggiore, the highest peak of the Trebulani Mountains.

Let's discover the etymology of the name

The name of the town is probably linked to the presence in the area of a temple dedicated to the god Janus, from which it takes its name, while "Vetusto" refers to the antiquity of the place. Fun fact: there is another town called Giano, but it is located in Umbria.

The history and traditions of Giano Vetusto.

Monuments and places of interest

Giano Vetusto has many interesting monuments to see. Among the religious architecture, we find the Church of Santi Filippo and Giacomo, belonging to the diocese of Teano-Calvi, and the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, belonging to the Archdiocese of Capua.

"Caduti" is the monument restored in 2003 that is used as an altar for the Holy Mass, while a marble plaque commemorates Dominick Pezzulo, who died during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

The tradition of Giano Vetusto

Giano Vetusto has several traditional festivals worth mentioning. The patron saint festival is held on the penultimate Sunday of August in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. The festival includes the traditional solemn triduum and a procession. At the end of the procession, the "Raffle of the Palm" is held, an auction that puts up for grabs the silk handkerchief attached to the palm that the saint holds in his right hand.

The festival of Santa Lucia is celebrated on the second Sunday of September and the festival of Our Lady of Grace on the first Sunday of July. Both festivals include sacred celebrations, stalls and musical performances.

In addition, for Saint Anthony, the traditional "Tournament of Saint Anthony" of Five-a-side Football (FIFA) is organized in the municipal field.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Giano Vetusto is a small town that deserves to be visited for its millennial history and traditions. The beauty of Monte Maggiore crowns the Campanian town, while the monuments enhance its culture. If you have the opportunity, I recommend taking a trip to Giano Vetusto and breathing in its unique atmosphere!
