Discovering Bastardo: a hamlet of Giano dell'Umbria
Welcome to Bastardo, a small hamlet of the municipality of Giano dell'Umbria, in the province of Perugia. Bastardo is a location that experienced its major growth after World War II and is currently considered the most populated and industrialized area in the whole municipal territory. According to Istat data, census 2015, it has 3383 residents.
Etymology of Bastardo
The place originally called ''Osteria del Bastardo'' was an ancient post station along the Via Flaminia and over the years '20 assumed the abbreviated form of "Bastardo", which we know today. In 1933, there was a need to change the name of the village, however, despite several attempts to change it with names such as Villa Romana, Termoelettropoli or Lignilia, the old name remained until today.

Economy and events in Bastardo
The territory of Bastardo is famous for its Olea europaea plots and for the production of a precious olive oil. Here is also located the company Farchioni, which produces high-quality olive oil. In addition to olive oil production, the area is also known for the presence of the thermal power plant "Perugino", owned by the Enel group. There are also some beaches near the place that are both vacation destinations for locals and visitors. Bastardo also hosts, every third Sunday of June, the Madonna del Pianto Festival.

Bastardo is a place full of tourist attractions. One of the most famous places is the Roman bridge on the ancient Via Flaminia, but there are also other places to visit, such as the Chiesina della Madonna del Pianto, which hosts the Madonna Festival, curated by the missionaries of the nearby Abbey of San Felice. The San Felice Abbey, on the other hand, is a splendid example of Romanesque architecture and is currently the "mother house" of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. The Toccioli area, instead, hosts interesting archaeological finds of an ancient Roman villa.
