Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Turin, a beautiful city located in northern Italy, in the heart of the Piedmont region. Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy by population, with 842,472 inhabitants (data from October 31st, 2022) and is part of the Metropolitan City of Turin, which has about 1.7 million inhabitants.
One of Italy's most important cities
Turin is one of the major educational, artistic, tourist, scientific and cultural hubs of Italy. In addition, it is the third largest center of the country's economy and industrial production, along with Milan and Genoa. Turin is one of the major centers of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, industrial design, sports, fashion and artificial intelligence. The city has evolved a lot in recent years and has gained international importance, being considered a Gamma-level global city, after Milan and Rome.
A city with ancient origins
Turin has a two-thousand-year history, probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic tribe. Later, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of Iulia Augusta Taurinorum in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin. In the course of the 11th century, it became under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy and, in 1563, became its capital. From 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia until becoming, in the 19th century, the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946.
A magical city
Turin is a magical city, where the past blends with the present. In 1911 it was the venue for the International Turin Exhibition, while in 2006 it was the location of the XX Winter Olympic Games. Since 2021, the city has hosted the ATP Finals and, in 2022, the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. In addition, it is the birthplace of some of the most important products of "Made in Italy", such as vermouth, Gianduiotto chocolates, breadsticks, and espresso coffee. It is also the hub of the Italian automotive industry.
The geographic location of Turin
Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po rivers. The latter crosses the city from south to north. Turin is also situated in front of the mouth of some important alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels. Other important alpine passes are the Valleys of Lanzo and Val Sangone.
UNESCO protected areas
There are areas and buildings protected by UNESCO within the territory of Turin. Some palaces and areas are part of the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, the area of the Po hills of Turin is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
In conclusion, Turin is a wonderful and sophisticated city that will never cease to amaze visitors. Its history, cultural and artistic heritage, cuisine, and geographic location make it a unique and charming city. If you decide to visit Turin, I am sure you will enjoy it. I have been there and I recommend it to everyone!
