Giacciano

Discovering Giacciano con Baruchella

Hello everyone, today I am going to talk about Giacciano con Baruchella, a small municipality located in the province of Rovigo in Veneto. This beautiful town has just over 2,000 inhabitants and is located west of Rovigo.

The geography of Giacciano con Baruchella

The territory of Giacciano con Baruchella is entirely flat and is bordered by the Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante rivers and the Scolo Malopera and Fossa Maestra canals, which follow the course of two historic Adige routes, those of Malopera and Castagnaro. The hamlet of Zelo, an integral part of the municipality, completes this little gem of Polesine.

Lying with Baruchella: history and nature in the heart of the Polesine.

The origin of the name Giacciano con Baruchella

The name Giacciano, like that of other similar localities, probably derives from the word "ghiaccio" (ice) and refers to the possibility of crossing the frozen waterway during the winter.

The name Baruchella, on the other hand, could derive from the Cisamini della Fratta family, known as Baruchello, who owned the surrounding lands of the town. It is unclear whether the family gave the name to the town or vice versa.

The history of Giacciano con Baruchella

The region of Giacciano con Baruchella, like much of Polesine, has often been flooded due to floods and river breaches. Thanks to the Camaldolese monastery of the Vangadizza Abbey, the first reclamation work was carried out after the famous Malopera breach in 1438. The Cisamini della Fratta, a noble Ferrara family, also promoted the reclamation of the area and built the first church dedicated to San Pietro Martire. The area was subsequently contested between the Duchy of Ferrara and the Republic of Venice, ending only in 1569 with the intervention of the Pope.

Reclamation work resumed thanks to the noble Bentivoglio d'Aragona family, coming from Bologna, who built the parish church of Giacciano in 1669 and an important rural complex, surrounded by rustic buildings and warehouses, as well as a masonry fence that served as a hunting reserve. The complex was intended for agriculture and the defense of the territory.

Living in Giacciano con Baruchella

Despite being a small town, Giacciano con Baruchella offers many opportunities to its inhabitants. Among the available services are the nursery and primary school, a well-stocked library, a pharmacy, some grocery stores, and a wide variety of sports activities such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and cycling.

But the real strength of the town is its location in the heart of Polesine, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and explore the area with bike and hiking excursions.

If you want to treat yourself to a break from the chaotic city, Giacciano con Baruchella is definitely a place to keep an eye on.
