Gerre de' Caprioli: a municipality on the border of the province of Cremona

Gerre de' Caprioli is an Italian municipality located on the border of the province of Cremona, in Lombardy. With its 1,305 inhabitants, the municipality is mainly composed of scattered groups of farmhouses protected by the large Po river through a series of master embankments. The toponym Gerre, very widespread in the Cremonese dialect along with the variant Gera, indicates a location where the river has deposited large quantities of gravel. The second part of the denomination instead derives from the presence of a noble family that in the past owned these lands.

The history of Gerre de' Caprioli

The municipality of Gerre de' Caprioli is located on the left of the Po river, a short distance from the capital. The area is located on a strip of land protected by the great river by a series of master embankments. The name Gerre derives from the fact that the Po river has deposited large quantities of gravel in this area. The second part of the denomination, Caprioli, derives from the presence of a noble family that in the past owned these lands. In the hamlet of Bosco ex Parmigiano, near the Po river, there is a square known as ex piarda Guidotti, where gravel was extracted from the river in the past. Today this building has been transformed into a research and documentation center, as well as a multipurpose hall.
