Germignaga
Discovering Germignaga!
Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about Germignaga, a municipality located in Lombardy, in the province of Varese, with a population of approximately 3842 inhabitants.
Physical geography
Germignaga is situated in the beautiful Valtravaglia, precisely on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Valtravaglia extends southeast towards Mesenzana la Valcuvia and southwest towards Porto Valtravaglia and Laveno. The territory, which covers an area of 4.66 square kilometers, extends in an area where its altitude varies from 193 meters to 375 meters above sea level. The town hall is located at an altitude of 204 meters above sea level.
Hydrography
There are three main watercourses in Germignaga: the Tresa river, which only touches the municipality; the Margorabbia stream, which runs through the entire village of Premaggio and is subject to flooding, and the San Giovanni stream, which is called "La Fiume" by the inhabitants and runs through the entire municipality.
Due to the presence of the lake and these watercourses, the city is often subject to flooding, even severe ones.
Climate
Germignaga has a continental type climate, with cold winters and many days of frost. However, thanks to the presence of Lake Maggiore, the climate is also influenced by Mediterranean traits. Summers are hot, humid and moderately rainy. Temperatures can exceed 30 °C, and humidity can reach 80%, causing sultriness.
Territory
There are many things to see in Germignaga. The municipality extends around the historic center, where there are historic buildings and churches of great artistic value. Among the churches, the parish church of Sant'Eusebio stands out, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, which houses several works of art.
The streets of the historic center are narrow and picturesque, ideal for a relaxing walk to discover the history of the municipality. Not far from the center, there is also the Municipal Library, a modern and welcoming structure.
Premaggio
The municipality of Germignaga also includes the locality of Premaggio, which is situated on a tongue of land between the Tresa river and the Margorabbia stream. Despite the frequent flooding, Premaggio was inhabited already in Roman times when perhaps a camp was built precisely because of the easy defensibility given by the presence of the two watercourses.
