History

Gera Lario has a long and rich history dating back to the times of ancient Romans. In fact, a necropolis and the mosaic of a temple dedicated to Jupiter were discovered in the village. In the Middle Ages, Gera was part of the Pieve di Olonio and then of Sorico, within the Duchy of Milan. In 1644, the territory of Gera was included in the fief of Tre Pievi, granted to the Gallio family. In 1807, the municipality of Gera merged with those of Montemezzo, Sorico, and Trezzone, and five years later, also the municipality of Bugiallo joined them. In 1929, the municipality changed its name to Gera Lario.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the banner of Gera Lario were granted in 2001. The three red crosses on a silver field recall the territory of Tre Pievi, while the lion takes up the Arms of the Gallio family, of which Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio was a member. The plain of azure with silver reflections represents the lake on which Gera Lario overlooks. The banner, on the other hand, is a cloth cut of red and white.

Religious architectures

The church of San Vincenzo was built in the fifteenth century, but is based on a Romanesque church from the eleventh-twelfth century, which was erected on the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter and a villa.
