History

Forte Begato was built in 1818 by the Savoy government on the city walls that make up the 17th-century Genoese defensive system. The barracks were completed in 1830, followed by the construction of the bastioned enclosure between 1832 and 1836. In 1849, the fortress was occupied by rebels, who used it as a base to bombard the royal army. However, when events turned in favor of the royal army, the rebels abandoned the fortress, which was found empty by the military authorities on April 10 of the same year.

During World War I, Austrian prisoners of war employed in reforestation work on Mount Peralto were imprisoned in the fortress. During World War II, the fortress was used for anti-aircraft arms and was partially destroyed by an English air bombardment in 1941. After the Armistice of Cassibile, the fortress was occupied by German troops until the end of the conflict. After the war, it was used by the Italian army as a depot until the early 2000s.

Recent history

In recent years, the Municipality of Genoa has decided to enhance the 17th-century defensive system and the Genoese fortifications, including Forte Begato. In 2010, the Municipality of Genoa, together with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the State Property Agency, signed an agreement to enhance these historical structures. In 2015, Forte Begato passed from the public domain to the Municipality of Genoa. Since then, it has been restored, but its current function remains uncertain. Initially, it was thought to transform Forte Begato into a location for associations of former combatants and a museum, but its final destination is still subject to decisions and debates.

In summary, Forte Begato is a historical testament to military architecture and the history of Genoa. If you're planning a trip to the Ligurian city, you should consider visiting this historical site. The fortress will surprise you with its architecture and strategic location. You'll spend an unforgettable day immersed in the history of the city of Genoa.
