This province was established by the regional law of February 4th, 2016 and comprises the territories of the former provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano, as well as the municipalities of the province of Cagliari that did not enter the metropolitan area of ​​Cagliari and the municipalities of Genoni and Seui.

However, due to the new reform of Sardinian local authorities in 2021, the Province of South Sardinia will merge with the Province of Medio Campidano and the Province of Sulcis Iglesiente. The Province of South Sardinia was established in February 2016 thanks to the regional law for the reform of provinces in Sardinia. The province included the territories of Campidano, low Marmilla, Sarcidano, Sarrabus, Trexenta, and Sulcis-Iglesiente. When the province joins Medio Campidano and Sulcis Iglesiente, its history will continue under a single denomination.
