Discovering the History of Genola
Early Settlements
Genola is a small municipality with just over 2500 inhabitants located in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont. Its history dates back to the first settlements of humans in the Cuneo plain, when several clusters of houses, including Genola, were formed from Celtic populations.
The Roman Period and the Tapparelli Castle
During the Roman era, Genola became one of the many "pagi" along secondary roads. The first documented sources date back to 1050, when the marchioness of Turin, Adelaide, wife of Oddone I, owned it. In 1300, the Tapparelli family settled in the village, building the castle that can still be admired today.
The French Invasion
Genola was not spared from the wars of the modern era: in the 16th century, the armies of Francis I of France and Emperor Charles V of Spain invaded the country, followed in 1630 by the troops of the Marquis Richelieu.
Municipal Independence
In 1796, Vittorio Amedeo III of Savoy decided to unite three-fifths of Genola placed under the jurisdiction of Savigliano to the territory and cadastre of the city's municipality. In 1798, the community of Genola applied to the French government for municipal independence, obtained in 1808 through a decree of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Tensions with Fossano and Savigliano
The birth of the autonomous municipality of Genola created tensions with the cities of Fossano and Savigliano, which sought rights over the disputed territories. Agreements were reached only after long legal processes.

During World War II, Genola was the scene of numerous dramatic episodes. In July 1944, lawyer Alfredo Cussino was assassinated by the Republican fascists with Nazi support, amidst the climate of terror reigning in Italy at that time.
