Momeliano
Welcome to Momeliano Castle
Hello friends! Today I will tell you about Momeliano Castle, an ancient medieval fortress located in the beautiful Luretta Valley, in the province of Piacenza.
History of the castle
The origin of Momeliano dates back to ancient times, as confirmed to us by the citation in the Traianea Alimentaria Tabula, a Roman document from 325 AD, where it speaks of the "fundus Mamuleianus". Later, a document from 869 informs us that Count Tado invested his nephew Manfredo Negrobono in it.
Momeliano Castle was first mentioned in 1368, when Castellino Dolzani sold it to Ruffino Borri. Since then, the castle has changed hands among various noble families, including the Bottigella, Radini Tedeschi, Ferrari, and Negri.
Today, the castle is privately owned and houses the cellars of a winery.
Structure of the castle
Momeliano Castle is an imposing medieval fortress built of brick and stone. The U-shaped structure with four corner towers is one of the most interesting examples of military architecture of the time.
Three of the towers are round-based, while the last is square-based. The crenellated arch allows for a walk along the narrow battlements, to enjoy a panoramic view of the valley below.
