Orezzo
Welcome to Orezzo, the hamlet of Gazzaniga
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Orezzo, the hamlet of Gazzaniga located in the province of Bergamo. Its name, which probably derives from Latin ''Uricius'', suggests a long history behind it.
Physical geography
Territory
Orezzo is a small village located about 700 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Cedrina, offering a panoramic view of the middle Seriana Valley and the city of Gazzaniga. It borders the Vertova Valley and the small Val del Gru, the town center, the Masserini district, the underlying Vertova and the surrounding forests of Ganda.
In total, the village is composed of numerous districts such as Blessa, Ca Gherfessi, Catabione, dei Mafe, dei Bergamaschi, Dossello, Gromplà, Sottochiesa and Turresso. The SP41 provincial road connects Orezzo to the town center of Gazzaniga, which is about 4 kilometers away, and Ganda (Aviatico) which is 5 kilometers further upstream.
History
Origins
The first records of the settlement date back to the 6th century BC, when the Orobi settled here, a population of Ligurian origin dedicated to pastoralism. In the 5th century BC, the area was integrated by Celtic populations, including the Cenomani Gauls. In the late Roman Empire, from the 5th century onwards, the first real settlement nucleus may have been born.
Etymology
The etymology of the name Orezzo probably derives from Latin ''Uricius'', but there are also other less accredited theories, such as the one that would like to derive the name from the suffix -ICUS, then translated from the Latin term ''ora'' ("margin") or from the Italian ''ombroso e ventilato'' (shaded and ventilated). However, the idea that the name derives from the noun ''aurum'' is unfounded.
Development
From the 13th century onwards, Orezzo was included in the de Honio Confederation, an administrative aggregation of the villages of the middle Seriana Valley aimed at giving greater political weight to small rural centers.
Conclusions
Orezzo is an ideal place for those looking for peace and nature, from which to explore the paths and mule tracks that connect the various villages in the area. Its panoramic position allows you to admire a breathtaking landscape of the valley and the city of Gazzaniga. If you pass by here, do not miss the opportunity to take a walk in its historic center. Here you will feel at home!
