History

Gavorrano is first mentioned in a document from 1164 and the son of Alberto IV, Rainaldo Alberti di Mangona, ruled Gavorrano until his death. Later, the Pannocchieschi d'Elci counts subjugated the town to the Municipality of Volterra and subsequently to that of Massa Marittima.
In the 1980s, the large deposits of pyrite were intensively exploited in Gavorrano, which were fundamental for the local economy.
