The territory of Gavorrano extends between the plain of Maremma Grossetana and the northern slope of the complex of Mount Alma, and borders other municipalities such as Massa Marittima, Roccastrada, and Grosseto. The altitude varies from 15 meters above sea level at the confluence of the San Giovanni stream with the Rigiolato stream near Bagno di Gavorrano to 531 meters above sea level at Poggio Palone on the border with the municipality of Scarlino.

Climate

The climate of Gavorrano is characterized by average annual temperatures ranging from +14.6°C to +15.4°C and average annual precipitation from 802 mm to 887 mm, depending on altitude and geographic location. During the cold period, heating systems can be used for a maximum of 12 hours per day.

History

The territory of Gavorrano has been frequented since the 7th century BC, as evidenced by the remains of various necropolises found in flat areas at the foot of Monte Calvo, probably burial areas of settlements that have now disappeared and were dependent on the city-state of Vetulonia. Gavorrano is first mentioned in a document from 1164 and the son of Alberto IV, Rainaldo Alberti di Mangona, ruled Gavorrano until his death. Later, the Pannocchieschi d'Elci counts subjugated the town to the Municipality of Volterra and subsequently to that of Massa Marittima.

In the 1980s, the large deposits of pyrite were intensively exploited in Gavorrano, which were fundamental for the local economy.
