Gavignano: history and nature in a medieval village.

The history of Gavignano

Gavignano has an ancient and fascinating history, dating back to Roman times. There are three hypotheses about the founding of Gavignano, but the most credited one refers to Aulo Gabinius, a Roman senator who decided to establish his residence on the hill that was later given the name Gabinianum.

From the Roman era, the history of Gavignano expanded with the arrival of Abbeys and Monasticism, which favored the birth of a church and the development of the village. Following Saracen raids in the 9th century, the organization of the State of the Church for the defense of its possessions began, giving rise to the creation of the first castles and fortified abbeys. Gavignano then takes on the appearance of a village in the shape of a "castrum," with the city walls and mastio respectively used for external defense and internal surveillance.

Historical notes on the characteristics of the castrum

The term "castrum" is of Latin origin and identifies the urban layout of medieval villages, which had the essential elements of city walls and mastio. The city walls served as external defense for the village, while the mastio was the Lord's house, but initially also served as a watchtower. The urban aspect of the village was characterized by the trapezoidal shape of the walls, built by the same houses, and by two doors with different features: the isolated Neapolitan door and the Roman door incorporated into the constructions.
