Physical geography

History
The road from Garzeno to the San Jorio pass has been used for centuries to connect the Val Mesolcina with the northern territories of Lake Como. In 1220, Frederick II of Swabia granted the so-called "Monte di Dongo" to the feudal lords of Val Mesolcina, the Sacco family, who also held Garzeno. In 1335, Garzeno became part of the Pieve di Dongo, and remained so until the end of the 18th century.
In 1402, the territory was again enfeoffed by the Sacco family, but Garzeno definitively broke away from the family two years later, with the death of the last descendant. Subsequently passed to the Trivulzio, Garzeno followed the fate of the Pieve di Dongo and the other neighboring pieves, forming the so-called "feud of the Three Pieves".
In the 16th century, Garzeno passed first to Gian Giacomo Medici and then to the Gallio family, which exercised its feudal rights until well past the middle of the 18th century. In 1751, the territory of Garzeno already extended to the hamlets of Scireso, Cotasco, and Catasco.
Symbols
The coat of arms and flag of Garzeno were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on October 2, 1989. In the quartered fields, silver and red are the colors of the Tre Pievi, gold and blue those of the Malacrida family, which held the territory in fief.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Garzeno was elevated to the seat of a parish in 1478, but its origin is much older, dating back to 1172.
