Garda

Welcome to the Municipality of Garda

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the Municipality of Garda, a small gem located in the province of Verona, in Veneto. Garda has 4,132 inhabitants and is located on the Veronese coast of Lake Garda, about 35 kilometers from Verona. I can guarantee you that this enchanting place is absolutely worth a visit!

Physical Geography

Garda is located northwest of Verona and is located in the center of the homonymous gulf, which extends to form a small peninsula, which includes Punta San Vigilio and the Bay of Mermaids. The municipality borders Bardolino to the south, Torri del Benaco to the north, Costermano sul Garda to the east, and the Brescian municipalities of San Felice del Benaco and Manerba del Garda to the west.

Garda is easily accessible via the A22 Brenner Motorway, exiting at the Affi-Lago di Garda Sud tollgate (about 9 km away) or by traveling along the SR 249 Gardesana Orientale towards Riva del Garda. Until 1956, there was also a connection with the Verona-Caprino-Garda railway line.

Climate

In Garda, as in all municipalities along the shores of Lake Garda, you can enjoy a milder climate than the inland areas, thanks to the mitigating action of the large mass of water. This climate is defined as sub-Mediterranean and will make your visit very pleasant.

History

The toponym Garda derives from the Lombard word "warda", which means guard, a raised place suitable for military observations or a barrier castle. This refers to the fortress erected during the first barbarian invasions on the Rocca di Garda, the hill overlooking the town, where there was a castle and a church dedicated to San Colombano. The area as a court ("Curtis Gardensis") was part of the court of the Monastery of San Colombano del Bardolino since the Lombard era, dependent on the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio.

Garda has been famous since the Middle Ages precisely for its Rocca di Garda, in which the queen Adelaide of Burgundy (empress) was imprisoned, who in 947 had married Lothair II of Italy, king of Italy, who died of poisoning. Later, Adelaide refused the marriage proposal of the son of the Duke of Ivrea Berengar II of Ivrea, who, for this reason, imprisoned her on the hill. According to some historical sources, the queen managed to escape, then became the wife of Otto I of Saxony, who came to Italy in 953. During Otto's reign, the fortress was dismantled for unknown reasons.

In the medieval period, Garda was the center of the administrative district that exercised its power over all the rural municipalities in the area. From the rural municipality derives the Corporation of the Ancient Originals, born in 1452 under the protection of the Republic of Venice, which conferred on it the rights to fish in the lake waters. The rights were later respected by Napoleon Bonaparte and by the Kingdom of Italy itself (1861-1946).
