During the Roman Empire, the village belonged to the "Regio XI Transpadana" and had the name of "Garbaniatum". It was positioned on the "Via Mediolanum-Bilitio" that connected "Mediolanum" (Milan) to "Luganum" (Lugano) passing through "Varisium" (Varese). At the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Garbagnate followed the events of the other villages in the region: first came the Heruli of Odoacer (476-493), then the Ostrogoths of Theodoric the Great (493-553).
