Gambolò

Welcome to Gambolò: a brief introduction

Hello everyone, I'm happy to introduce you to Gambolò, an Italian municipality located in the province of Pavia, in Lombardy. This city is inhabited by 9648 people and is located in eastern Lomellina. Gambolò is situated on the Terdoppio and not far from the right bank of the Ticino. In addition, Gambolò is part of the urban area of Vigevano, a city located south of it.

The history of Gambolò

Gambolò has a long history that begins in the period of the recent Mesolithic era, around 5500-4500 BC, when some groups of hunters periodically stopped along the right bank of the Terdoppio during their hunting excursions.

Later, during the middle and late Bronze Age (2000-1900 BC), the village of Gambolò developed on the hills of the Terdoppio. In the Celtic era, Gambolò experienced a remarkable settlement phase, from the second half of the 3rd century BC, and in this period numerous villages were built.

During the Roman era, from the end of the 1st century BC, Gambolò experienced a significant contribution in terms of technical and cultural knowledge thanks to Roman settlers, merchants, and artisans. Some votive areas found in the church of Sant'Eusebio testify to the presence of a place of worship.

In the Middle Ages, the fortress of Gambolò safely housed the inhabitants of the village and the surrounding countryside. In this period, there was the coexistence of two different dioceses, that of Novara and that of Pavia.

Gambolò: history and traditions of a Lombard municipality.

The dioceses of Novara and Pavia in Gambolò

The diocese of Novara depends on the parish of S. Pietro di Masovico, located about two kilometers outside the current settlement, beyond the Terdoppio. From San Pietro depends the church of S. Gaudenzio which will become the parish church of the town in the following centuries.

The diocese of Pavia instead finds its dependence in the parish of Sant'Eusebio, documented between the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1289, the Monastery and Church of San Pietro in Verzolo came into possession of numerous funds in the area.

Gambolò throughout history

In these centuries, Gambolò politically gravitated in the orbit of Pavia, which was constantly at war with Milan. Over the years, Gambolò was repeatedly besieged and damaged.

The first time the name of the town appears in history is in 999, in a document stating that a certain "Ademarus de Gambolate" must compensate the Archdiocese of Vercelli Leone di Vercelli for the damage caused.

Conclusions

Gambolò is a city rich in history and traditions. Its geographical location, on the banks of the Terdoppio and near the right bank of the Ticino, makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers. If you are looking for a quiet and charming place to visit in Lombardy, I recommend stopping by Gambolò. I am sure you will enjoy it!
