Origin of the Name and Inhabitants' Appellation

Toponomastic scholar Dante Olivieri derives the name of the municipality from the Latin name "Gallicinus" with the suffix "-anu". Therefore, it would be a predial name that has left its trace in the name of the assignee of a property located in this territory. The inhabitants of Galzignano Terme are called "galzignanesi".

History of Galzignano Terme

Ancient History

The first signs of civilization in Galzignano date back to the 14th and 12th centuries BC, in the Bronze Age and Iron Age. Archaeological findings testify that on the southern slope, just below the peak of Mount Orbieso, a small group of people lived in that place for strategic purposes.

Middle Ages

The oldest document in which Galzignano is mentioned dates back to February 9, 952, where it is reported that the Emperor Otto I of Saxony confirmed to the Chapter of the Cathedral of Padua "In Galzignano mansiones tres" in that year. During the 13th century, the "Monte Del Castello" or "Castelletto", a small castle mentioned for the first time in 1259, was built in Galzignano on the top of a hill. In 1297, in the papal tithe, the name of "Galzignano" is mentioned again. Moreover, in that period, it seems that between 1200 and 1300 there was another fortress on Mount Castellazzo; both names of these hills would derive from the two different fortresses.

Renaissance

From the Renaissance onwards, important Venetian families purchased the lands of Galzignano and decided to build their homes here. thanks to these important contributions, the areas at the foot of the mountains were reclaimed from the swamps.
