Galluccio

Discovering Galluccio: between history and nature

Hello! Today I'll tell you about Galluccio, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania. Here you can find Monte Camino, a natural beauty framed by vineyards and lush woods.

Physical geography

Galluccio, with its 2022 inhabitants, covers an area of thirty-two square kilometers between Monte Camino and Roccamonfina. It is part of the territory of the Monte Santa Croce Mountain Community.

Its territory was inhabited since the Paleolithic era, but what made Galluccio a special place were the Aurunci, followed by the Romans. It is said that the name of the town derives from the Head of the colony, Trebonio Gallo.

History

Origins

According to another hypothesis, the name indicates a linguistic root that means "fire of the volcanoes", given that the area was rich in volcanoes, particularly that of Monte Friello.

In the 10th century, Galluccio suffered raids by the Saracens, who built a stronghold to defend themselves from the attacks of the troops of the Pope John X League. Even today, in that location, there is a village called "Saraceni".

Middle Ages

After the defeat of the Saracens, the princes of Capua built a fortress on the territory of Galluccio, protected by the water of the Peccia river. The Galluccio family established a fiefdom around the fortress and held it until 1480, when Ferrante assigned the fiefdom of Galluccio to Rossetto Fieramosca.

Curiosities about Galluccio

Galluccio is known for its high-quality wine made with the indigenous Casavecchia variety. The area is very suitable for vine cultivation, and agriculture has always been the main sector of the local economy.

Galluccio also has many tourist attractions, such as the Church of San Clemente, the Oasi del Pecolato, and the Convent of the Capuchins.

For nature lovers, Galluccio offers many opportunities for hikes, walks, and bike rides. Monte Camino, 1270 meters high, is a popular destination for hikers.

Conclusions

Galluccio is an incredible and unique place, where history and nature meet in a special way. I hope I've shown you something new, and if you have the opportunity, to visit this charming town. Galluccio awaits you with its beauty and its millenary history.
