Gallinaro: nature, history, and spirituality at the heart of Lazio.

The history of Gallinaro

The village of Gallinaro was first mentioned in 1023 and was probably built by the Count of Sora, and in 1067 it passed to the Count of Aquino. In the 13th century, the Sanctuary of San Gerardo was founded, which developed thanks to many donations. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the population lived in precarious conditions, was mainly dedicated to agriculture and subject to frequent raids by bandits. It is during this period that the famous jurist Loreto Apruzzese was born here, a teacher at the University of Naples Federico II.

Monuments and places of interest

The community of Gallinaro is historically linked to the cult of the black Madonna of the Sanctuary of Canneto, venerated in the nearby territory of Settefrati, where the ancient pilgrimages to this destination had and have a meeting and connection point for the faithful coming from Lazio and the neighboring regions (Abruzzo and Molise), precisely in Gallinaro. The main church, dedicated to the patron saint of Gallinaro, is San Gerardo di Gallinaro di Silloth, the destination of an ancient pilgrimage especially by the companies of Scanno and Pettorano.

Population and religiosity

Most of the population professes the Catholic Church within the diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo. The city celebrates the feast of San Gerardo every year on August 10 and 11 with a pilgrimage and a civil festival animated by famous singers and comedians.

Traditions and folklore of Gallinaro

In addition to the feast of San Gerardo, Gallinaro is also a pilgrimage site due to the appearance of the baby Jesus to a girl, Giuseppina Norcia, which occurred on June 13, 1947. Over the years, a religious group has developed that, recognizing healings and subsequent "divine revelations," has come into conflict with ecclesiastical authority.

Conclusion

Gallinaro is not just a commune but a place rich in history and traditions, where you can enjoy breathtaking views, rediscover spirituality, and savor the brilliant typical Italian cuisine. Come and visit us and appreciate the beauty of our hills and our landscape!
