Galliera

Welcome to Galliera!

Galliera is a scattered municipality of 5,607 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bologna in Emilia-Romagna. We are pleased to invite you to discover this wonderful place.

History

Galliera has a very interesting history. Onorato Malaguti, a communist union leader who went into self-exile in Belgium during the fascist regime, was born in San Venanzio in 1901. Between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, vast landholdings were created in Galliera by landowners such as Antonio Bonora (1859-1921), Giuseppe Vittorio Venturi (1860-1936), and his sons Brenno (1885-1961) and Enea Venturi. They reclaimed many acres of land, adopted modern plowing and fertilizing techniques, and encouraged the cultivation of Oryza sativa. However, the rice paddies of Galliera were the scene of long strikes and harsh social struggles, both in the first and second post-war period. Galliera was also hit by the earthquakes of Emilia in 2012, which caused various injuries to buildings and agricultural structures.
