Galliavola

Hello friends, today I want to tell you a bit about the history of a small municipality in Lombardy called Galliavola. This municipality, which only has 174 inhabitants, is located in southern Lomellina, near the Agogna river and not far from the left bank of the Po.

The history of Galliavola

It is interesting to know that Galliavola, as well as Gallia, a hamlet of Pieve del Cairo, derive from Roman agricultural estates belonging to the Gallius family, with the names of Gallia and Galliabula. In 1164, Galliavola came under the rule of Pavia, being part of the county of Lomello. The family of the Captains of Grumello had the lordship over Galliavola, probably originating from the ancient locality of Grumello located in the territory of the same municipality. The Grumello were confirmed in their possessions in 1464 and divided into several branches, remaining feudal lords until the 17th century. Subsequently, the fief passed to the Lambertenghi and then in 1660 to the Jesuits of Brera, in Milan. After the abolition of the order, the fief was taken over.

In the eighteenth century, the ancient municipalities of Grumello and Schivanoia were aggregated to Galliavola, always forming a single fiefdom. Schivanoia, whose name origins indicate a place of delights and which could have been a hunting villa, still had a castle in the eighteenth century. Today Schivanoia still exists as a farm. Grumello was an important place between Galliavola and Lomello, but by the eighteenth century it had been reduced to a tiny farm and has disappeared for some time.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Galliavola was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on 25 February 2008. The silver cross divides the shield, but could also be a reference to the coat of arms of Pavia. The walking lion and the tortelli with the patent cross are taken from the coat of arms of the De Capitani di Grumello and Galliavola or Grumelli families. The rice plants recall the economy and agricultural vocation of the country. The banner is a blue cloth.
