The hilly zone makes up the central area of the province and represents 46% of the territory, while the plain, which is only found in the southern zone of the province, represents 22%. Three rivers cross the province: the Ticino, the Olona and the Tresa. Moreover, Varese is renowned for its lakes, including Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano. But even the smaller lakes, such as Lake Varese, Lake Comabbio, Lake Monate, Delio Lake, Lake Ganna, Lake Ghirla, and Lake Biandronno, are among its attractions. These seven lakes are called the Sette Laghi Varesini.

Institutional history

The current province of Varese has roots dating back to the Lombard era, when there was the Seprio, which later became part of the Duchy of Milan in the 14th century. During the Austrian period in 1786, the first capital of the province was created in Gallarate, but soon it was moved to Varese.

Main cities

One interesting thing about the province of Varese is the diversity of its main cities. The most populous municipality is Busto Arsizio, with around 83,008 inhabitants, which is slightly larger than the capital of the province, Varese, with around 79,639 inhabitants. Even Gallarate, with around 53,964 inhabitants, and Saronno, with around 38,411 inhabitants, are important cities in the province.
