Let's discover together the history of the city, the theories about the origin of its name, and the places to visit!

The toponymy of Noha

The original name of the city was ''Noe'' or ''Noia'', but over time it has changed. The most accredited theory regarding the origin of the name is the derivation from the Latin term "domus novae" (new houses). In support of this theory, there is the dialectal term still used to indicate the village: "Nove", which in Salento dialect means "new". However, there are other theories such as the one that the city inherited the name from the feudalist family of De Noha from Lecce or that it derives from the Greek word "noe", which indicated the favorable observation position of the city, higher than the surrounding territory.
