The history of the airport
Lecce-San Cataldo Airport was built back in 1970 by the Lecce Aeroclub with the aim of dedicating the area to amateur activities and flight school. In 1990, due to a lack of resources, the airport closed its doors until 2000, when the flight school was restarted and services such as helicopter rescue, air taxis, forest fire monitoring, and territory reconnaissance were offered.
In 2002, Fly Mediterraneo company took over the management of the facility and invested considerable resources in the recovery and expansion of the airport structure. In 2014, due to various reasons, the airport closed again. After five years of inactivity, the airport was officially reopened on June 14, 2019!

Currently, the infrastructure is open to non-commercial general aviation traffic with a limitation of 5700 kg MTOW and passengers under 10. It has a runway of 1000×37 m with an infrastructure reference code of 1A and a fire service classified as a station. The new channel assigned for general aviation needs is 118.880 with a spacing of 8.33 kHz.
