Francenigo
Explore Francenigo: Monuments, Villas and Industries
Hello friends, today we're talking about Francenigo, a very interesting hamlet in the municipality of Gaiarine in the province of Treviso. With a population of around 2,473 inhabitants, Francenigo borders Cavolano, San Giovanni di Livenza to the east, Brugnera to the southeast and Calderano to the south.
One of the most interesting features of Francenigo is its geographical location, just five kilometers from the capital and near the "Sacile ovest" entrance of the A28 Conegliano-Portogruaro motorway, on the border with Friuli-Venezia Giulia. But what really makes Francenigo fascinating are its monuments, villas, industries and natural areas.
Religious architecture
The parish church of Francenigo, dedicated to St. Titian, dates back to 1547, built on the site of a pre-existing building. Contemporary is the bell tower characterized by an elegant shape.
The church is an example of sixteenth-century religious architecture, which has undergone many renovations over the years. Today the facade is triple-parted, with a large rose window in the center.
Important works of art are kept inside the church, including an altar panel from 1564 and Pomponio Amalteo's panels.
Venetian villas and civil architecture
Villa Piovesana, dating back to the eighteenth century, is one of the Venetian villas in Francenigo and the Regional Institute of Venetian Villas describes it among its treasures.
The villa consists of a main body, with two floors plus attic, with rectangular mullioned windows and a large round arch portal, and later adjacent buildings.
Surrounding the villa is a garden with a fountain, an eighteenth-century well and lush vegetation.
But the villas are not the only civil architectures in Francenigo: there are also numerous mills on the territory, including the Mulino sull'Aralt and the Mulino Tonet, now abandoned.
However, the Mulino Tonet, moved by the waters of the Fossa del Cimitero, was the site of a blacksmith workshop. Finally, industrial archaeology is represented by Seta Piovesana, a textile industry active between 1922 and 1960, which offers visitors the chance to observe its original architectures and machinery.
Natural areas
In the eastern part of the hamlet, on the border with the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, flows the Livenza river, characterized by meanders around which typical lush vegetation grows.
But the Aralt river also runs right through the center of Francenigo. This watercourse originates in the municipality of Orsago and flows into the Livenza, about a hundred meters after the church of Francenigo, towards Brugnera.
Events
In 1981, the A.R.Cu.F (recreational cultural association Francenigo) was founded, which organizes the village festival every year in the first two weeks of July. Here you can taste local specialties, dance and have fun in the festive atmosphere of the village.
But that's not all: the association also organizes other events, such as the Ombra Fest in October. From 1995 to 2017, there was also a very particular race: the Palio dei Vecchi Mestieri, a race held in the main streets of the village with various colors.
In conclusion, the hamlet of Francenigo is a tourist destination rich in historical, architectural and natural treasures. It is perfect for a day trip with family or friends, to discover together the beauty of the local cultural heritage.
