The Origin of the Name Fuscaldo

The name of the town comes from the Latin "fons calidus," which refers to the thermal springs in the area. However, some historical sources suggest that the city may have been called "Foscoaldus" in honor of a medieval personality from the area.

A Bit of Fuscaldo's History

The Fuscaldo territory has been inhabited since ancient times. During the Gothic War between 535 and 553, the city, located on the hill overlooking the Vardaro stream valley, proved to be a safe place for the population. During the Lombard domination, this hilltop was an ideal place to control and monitor the surrounding territory. The area was also subjected to Saracen attacks and feudal lordships. In 1496, the Spinelli dynasty took possession of the city's government, which lasted until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.
