Breonio
Breonio: a hamlet in the heart of Lessinia
Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about Breonio, a small hamlet in the municipality of Fumane, located in the province of Verona, in the heart of the regional natural park of Lessinia. Its high altitude and panoramic view of the valley below make it a particularly suggestive place, ideal for a break from the hectic daily life.
History
In the past, Breonio was an independent municipality until it was suppressed and aggregated to Fumane together with Molina and Gorgusello in 1929. An interesting fact about the history of Breonio is the discovery of the original autograph manuscript of Berengario I, who donated the court of Breonio to the faithful Bertelo in 920. The story of the parish church is also singular: the old church of San Marziale proved to be too small and a new, larger temple was built above Gorgusello and Molina to also serve these locations. Unfortunately, due to the weight of the construction on unstable ground, the church began to show signs of collapse just a few years after the consecration, until the decision to definitively close it for worship in 1952. Later, it was mined to recover the necessary material for the construction of the new parish church of San Marziale in Santa Maria Regina, where most of the artistic relics of the old structure were transferred.
Monuments and places of interest
Despite the passage of time and the closure of the old church, Breonio still retains places of interest that are worth visiting. Firstly, the Church of Saints John and Marziale, which has existed since at least the thirteenth century and features sixteenth-century frescoes and a precious wooden polyptych. In addition, the Church of San Marziale, isolated from the center of the town, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, features an eighteenth-century bell tower with six bells and is the only bell tower in the entire area. Finally, I would like to mention the Church of San Marziale in Santa Maria Regina, parish, built in the fifties, where most of the artistic treasures of the old church were transferred, such as the precious polychrome marble high altar.
Conclusions
In conclusion, Breonio is a charming hamlet, rich in history and natural beauty. If you love walks and fresh mountain air, I recommend a visit to Breonio. You won't regret it!
