Economic Importance

Turin is the third complex of Economy-Industrial Production in the country, together with Milan and Genoa, and constitutes one of the major university, art, tourism, science, and cultural hubs in Italy. Its economy is based on the automotive industry, but there are also important centers of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, wine and food, space (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Turin is rich in two thousand years of history and was probably founded around the 3rd century BC. By the Taurini, then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC. A city of the Duchy of Savoy, it became its capital in 1563. Over the centuries, Turin became increasingly important and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861). In the 19th century, it was the first Capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946). Turin is also home to the International Exhibition of Turin, the XX Winter Olympics, the ATP Finals, and the Eurovision Song Contest.

UNESCO-protected sites

In the territory of Turin, there are also areas and buildings included in two UNESCO-protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy residences in Piedmont, which is a heritage of humanity, and the Po Hills area, which is a Biosphere Reserve.

History

Founding of Turin

Turin was founded by the Taurini around the 3rd century BC in the vicinity of its current position. It was subsequently transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC.

After the Ostrogothic dominion, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin.

After becoming the capital of Marquisate of Turin, Turin passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century.

Turin became a city of the Duchy of Savoy in 1563.

Capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy

From 1720, Turin was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) and was the first Capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) from 1861 to 1865.

Territory

Turin is located in the plain delimited by several rivers such as the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The latter crosses the city from south to north. Turin faces the mouth of some alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels (Frejus Railway Tunnel and Frejus Road Tunnel), Lanzo Valleys, and Val Sangone.
