A city with a thousand facets

Hello friends! Today I want to tell you about a fantastic city, a city with a thousand facets: Turin. With a population of over 840,000 inhabitants, Turin is a very large city and is the fourth most populous municipality in Italy. It is the capital of the Piedmont region and the metropolitan city of Turin.

Turin is a very important city in terms of economy and industry. It is the third largest economy-industrial production complex in the country, along with Milan and Genoa. About 1.7 million people live in its metropolitan area. But Turin is not just an industrial city: it is also an important hub for universities, arts, tourism, sciences, and culture. Many areas and monuments here are included in two UNESCO-protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the Savoy Residences in Piedmont circuit and the Po Hills area.

A millennial history

Turin's history dates back two thousand years. The city was probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, who called it Taurasia. Later, the city was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum'' in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic rule, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy. In 1563, the city became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. From 1720 until 1861, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, a state that in the 19th century would lead to the Risorgimento and make Turin the first Capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

An important cultural and sporting center

Turin is a very important city from a cultural and sporting point of view. Many international events are held here, such as the 1911 International Exhibition, the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, and the ATP Finals. Furthermore, it is the birthplace of many Made in Italy symbolic products, such as vermouth, Gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee. Turin is also the home of the Italian car industry and other important industries such as banking, insurance, IT, and cinema.

The physical geography of Turin

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The Po river flows through the city from south to north. Turin lies in front of some alpine valleys' mouths, such as the Val di Susa, which connects the city to nearby France through the Frejus tunnels, the Lanzo Valleys, and the Sangone Valley.

In conclusion, Turin is a wonderful city, with a millennial history and great importance in terms of economy, culture, and sports. If you haven't visited it yet, I recommend you do so: you will be fascinated!
