Poffabro

A trip to Poffabro: the village of blacksmiths

If there’s one thing that characterizes Poffabro, it’s the beauty of the village and its rural architecture. The village takes its name from "Pratum Fabri", the blacksmith's meadow, but in reality its origins date back to the Roman era, when a road passed through here leading directly to the Alps.

History of Poffabro

Poffabro is located in Val Colvera, in the Carnic Prealps, and has changed a lot over time. In 1339 the village was called Prafabrorum, then in 1810 with the Napoleonic decree it became a fraction of Frisanco. In 1976, the Friuli earthquake caused great damage to the village, but it managed to recover and today is considered one of the hundred most beautiful villages in Italy.

Monuments and places of interest in Poffabro

The village is famous for its rural architecture, an example of a more fanciful and rational spontaneous architecture in the Prealps according to the painter Armando Pizzinato. The beauty of the village lies in the absence of palaces and in the simplicity of pillars, stairs, balconies, and stone arches in harmony with nature. The Church of San Nicolò Vescovo is a symbol of the undeniable faith of the territory, expressed also by its grandeur compared to that of other buildings, whose physiognomy was defined in the nineteenth century, although it was often subject to restorations and redesigns due to frequent earthquakes. A visit to the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Health, erected in 1873 in Pian delle Merie in neoclassical forms and to the masterpieces, the statues in painted and gilded wood, is equally interesting. In addition, various votive chapels scattered throughout the territory can be found, a devotional requirement linked to singular events.

The economy of Poffabro

The production of wooden and wicker objects is one of the main activities of the village, and the "scarpets", a kind of velvet slippers, are one of the most typical elements of the local tradition. During the Christmas period, do not miss the visit to the nativity scenes that can be found throughout the village.

The cuisine of Poffabro

The cuisine of the village is characterized by the simplicity of its dishes, which use ingredients from the local tradition. Among the typical dishes, there are the frico, polenta, potato gnocchi, and desserts such as gubana (a puff pastry dessert filled with raisins and nuts) and apple strudel.
