Introducing Osigo, the Hillside Hamlet of Fregona
Hello everyone! Today, I want to tell you about Osigo, a small hamlet in the municipality of Fregona in the province of Treviso. Located on a hill, the town is nestled between the Belluno Prealps and the plains below, offering a spectacular view of the surrounding area.
A Bit of Physical Geography
Osigo is located about 400 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a wide natural basin. Thanks to this location, the town has always been a strategic point for the cultivation of olive and grape, as evidenced by the production of the famous wine Colli di Conegliano Torchiato di Fregona.
The town borders several other hamlets, including Farra d'Alpago (Belluno province) to the north, Montaner (Sarmede) to the east, Sarmede to the south, and the main town of Fregona to the west.
A Bit of Toponymic History
But let's come to the name of Osigo. It probably derives from the Roman family Ausius, who had been entrusted with the custody of the territory. However, there is also a popular version according to which the name Osigo derives from the union of "Osi" (contraction of Oasis) with the suffix -gus- (or -cus-), present in many towns in the area.

The Parish Church
The Church of San Giorgio Martire is certainly the symbol of Osigo. Located in a panoramic and central position, the church is in neoclassical style, with a gabled façade surmounted by a pediment supported by four semi-columns of the Ionic order.
Next to the church, we also find the ancient stone bell tower and the rectory. On it, there is a large painted sundial that makes the landscape even more characteristic.
The Hamlets of Osigo
Osigo is composed of several ancient rural hamlets, each with its own tradition and peculiarity. Among these are Borgo Da Re, Borgo Piazza, Borgo Luca, Borgo Col, Borgo Danese, and Borgo Coilsola.
The Colle di San Daniele
The Colle di San Daniele is a magical and fascinating place, where the church dedicated to the figure of San Daniele stands. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Veneto-Friulian Plain. On Christmas, it is customary to hang a luminous star here, visible from the entire area.
