If you are looking for a peaceful place surrounded by nature, then Fregona is the perfect destination for you! This municipality of 2,778 inhabitants is located in the province of Treviso, in the heart of Veneto. Despite its small size, Fregona is a real concentration of natural beauty and history, which is definitely worth discovering.

Physical geography: unspoiled nature and breathtaking landscapes

The first thing that will strike you about Fregona is definitely the unspoiled nature and breathtaking landscapes. The municipality extends over the foothills of the northeast Vittorio Veneto and a good part of the Cansiglio plateau. In this area, you will find some of the highest peaks in Veneto, such as Pizzoc (1,565 m) and Millifret (1,581 m), which represent some of the most spectacular panoramic spots in the Fregona territory.

But Fregona is not only about mountains and stunning peaks: the area is also rich in springs and watercourses, among which the Carron stream stands out. Moreover, we recommend you to visit Lake Madruc, a small man-made body of water located near Fratte.

Cansiglio represents an invaluable natural heritage and the Fregona portion is protected by some protected areas: the Piaie Longhe-Millifret Integral Natural Reserve, the State Reserve Campo di Mezzo-Pian di Parrocchia and the Bus della Genziana Natural Reserve, the latter being one of the rare examples of speleological reserve.

Mop, nature, and history in the heart of Veneto.

History: a long tradition that dates back to the Iron Age

But Fregona is not only about nature and stunning landscapes: the municipality also has a long history that dates back to the Iron Age. Fregona was indeed very favorable to human settlement, favored by its sunny position, abundance of water resources, and the protection provided by the mountainous reliefs. Even under the Roman domination, the area was civilized: traces of it remain in the place names and some coins dating back to the empires of Tiberius and Maximinus Thrax.

The toponym Fregona probably derives from a Germanic anthroponym, but there are also other hypotheses about its origin. The area seems to confirm a past more than marginal presence of Germanic populations in the area, while a limited but ascertained veneration of pagan cults that took place among these peoples is at the basis of the famous legend of Augusta di Serravalle that tells the story of a saint who was born right in Fregona.

Later on, Fregona belonged to the diocese of Belluno-Feltre and then was the fiefdom of the counts of Montanara, who had built a fortress on the current Mount Castle, in Piai.

Conclusion: a municipality to discover

In conclusion, we recommend you to visit Fregona to discover a charming municipality in the heart of Veneto.
