Messina: from province to metropolitan city

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the province of Messina, which has recently ceased to exist and has become the metropolitan city of Messina. This province, which covered the northeastern tip of Sicily and overlooked the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Strait of Messina and the Ionian Sea, was established after the territory passed from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Italy between 1861 and 1946.

History

After World War II, the special Sicilian statute of 1946 provided for the suppression of the old provinces. However, the entity was reconstituted with regional law n. 16 of 1963. In 1986, all the provincial districts of the island were abolished and replaced by free municipal consortia, called regional provinces. The regional province of Messina continued to exist until the regional law of August 4, 2015, when it was replaced by the metropolitan city of Messina.
