Frasso Telesino

Frasso Telesino: a Campanian municipality

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Frasso Telesino, a municipality in the province of Benevento in Campania, which has a population of about 2043 inhabitants.

Physical geography

Frasso Telesino is located on the western slope of Taburno Camposauro, a breathtaking landscape that includes the peaks of Monte Cardito and Serra del Ceraso. The municipal territory extends between 65 and 1220 meters above sea level, with an altimetric range of 1155 m. It should be noted that Frasso Telesino is home to the mountain community of Taburno.

Frasso Telesino: history, monuments and territory in Campania

History

The name of the municipality derives from "terra frassorum" or "castrum fracti", but its Telesino appellation was added to distinguish it from other homonymous centers. According to tradition, the town was founded by people who managed to save themselves from the destruction of Telesia in 1349. However, the municipality is mentioned in a document from the X century. Throughout its history, the territory of Frasso Telesino has seen the passage of many noble families, including the Counts of Caserta, the de la Rath, the Gambacorta, the Pignatelli, the de Ponte, the Dentice and the Spinelli, who held it until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of the municipality of Frasso Telesino were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on October 25, 2016. The gonfalon is a white flag with a blue border.

Monuments and places of interest

Frasso Telesino boasts numerous places of interest, including the Grotto of San Michele, probably opened to worship by the Lombards, the Church of the Madonna of Campanile or the Madonna del Soccorso, built by Princess Giulia Gambacorta in honor of a carved wooden Marian image from the twelfth century found among the ruins of a medieval chapel. Do not miss the Palazzo Gambacorta, the residence of the Frasso feudal lords, and the Palazzo Mosiello, from 1675, one of the most characteristic court residences of the Mosiello noble family, originally from Verona.

Society

Demographic evolution

Frasso Telesino has recorded a substantial decline in population over the years, from a maximum of 3175 inhabitants registered in 1951 to a minimum of just over 2000 units in 2018.

Economy

The village has a strong agricultural-pastoral vocation, which allows it to produce excellent wines such as Aglianico, Piedirosso, and Falanghina. The agricultural area used in 2000 was 1065.39 hectares.
