Frassineto Po
Discovering Frassineto Po, the municipality of the lower Monferrato
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Frassineto Po, a Piedmontese municipality located in the province of Alessandria, in the beautiful territory of the lower Monferrato. Its population is 1408 inhabitants and its original name is "Frassiné da Pò" in Piedmontese.
Brief history of Frassineto Po
Frassineto Po has a rich and fascinating history. In the Middle Ages, the feudal lordship belonged to the Bishops of Vercelli, but later passed to the Cane family of Casale Monferrato. In 1187, it was ceded to the Monastery of Rivolta, but in 1355 it became part of the Marchesato di Monferrato. In 1371, it fell under Milan, controlled by the Gonzaga family since 1446. The parish was part, until 1804, of the diocese of Milan, but then became part of the diocese of Casale. During the Italian Second War of Independence, Frassineto Po lost 8 soldiers in 1859.
Village of the Book and Palazzo Mossi
Since 2003, Frassineto Po is a Village of the Book. This project was promoted by the publisher Claudio Maria Messina and Senator Angelo Muzio, who created a privileged showcase for out-of-print, used and antique books. Cultural events take place in the village throughout the year: meetings with authors, conferences, theatrical performances, art or photography exhibitions. The permanent headquarters of the Village is hosted in the east wing of Palazzo Mossi, a sumptuous and complex neoclassical building commissioned in 1812 by Archbishop Vincenzo Maria Mossi to the architect Agostino Vitoli of Spoleto. The palace also houses a historic center for the interpretation of the Po landscape wanted by the Park of the Po Vercellese/Alessandrino, where visitors can discover the millennial history of the territory with multimedia displays, video stations and scenography. In addition, the Booklet has been opened, the first book outlet, where it is possible to find and buy hard-to-find books through traditional sales channels.
