With a population of over 31,000 inhabitants, it is the capital of the province of Vibo Valentia and overlooks the Coast of the Gods, one of the most beautiful and renowned stretches of the Calabrian coast. In this text, we will explore the physical geography, hydrography and climate of the city.

Physical geography

Vibo Valentia: city on the Coast of the Gods.

Territory

Vibo Valentia is located on a large schistose hill terrace and extends along the slope of a hill. Thanks to its strategic position since ancient times, the city dominates both the hinterland, the Calabrian mountain range of the Serre, and the coastal area with its port and tourist stations. To reach the port of the Vibo Marina fraction, it is necessary to travel by car.

The municipality of Vibo Valentia is located at an altitude ranging from 476 m above sea level in the lowest part to 567 meters above sea level in the highest part of the hill. The three major concentrations of industrial activities in the municipality are in the Località Aeroporto, Porto Salvo and on the border with Maierato, while the commercial area is located inside the city on the hill, as well as the largest demographic concentration.

Hydrology

The most important river in the municipal territory is the Mesima, which rises at the foot of Mount Mazzucolo and flows into the Mediterranean Sea north of San Ferdinando. The city has numerous river valleys, among which the Sant'Anna and the Trainiti stand out. The effluents of the Mesima are the Marepotamo River, the Metramo River, and the Vena River, and to the right are the Cinnarello ditch and the Mammella stream. The river flows behind the Norman-Swabian castle, within the eponymous valley.

Climate

The summer climate in Vibo Valentia is never really hot and can barely reach 30 °C. However, summers can be very humid and sultry, with a different situation on the coast where temperatures can reach 35 °C but with a lower level of humidity. The climate is pleasant and never too cold. Vibo Valentia often boasts sunny days that reach 20 °C.

In summary, Vibo Valentia is a city that is in an excellent position, with a splendid view of the sea, the Calabrian mountain range of the Serre, and the hinterland. Thanks to its geographical position, the city has been an important crossroads since the times of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
