The history of Francavilla Marittima: A Citadel Through Time

In the fifteenth century, the town was part of the assets of the Sanseverino family, powerful princes of Bisignano and feudal lords of Cassano allo Ionio. Its origins, however, are even more ancient, dating back to the times of Magna Graecia, with the construction of the legendary city of "Lagaria." The town is also described as a "divisa" in Italian medieval and Renaissance history, meaning a dependent hamlet of a larger centre. Over time, the town became a real township, renamed Francavilla Marittima in 1863 because it was close to the sea.

Monuments and places of interest: a stroll through beauty

If you want to see some of the most important monuments in the municipality, we recommend taking a walk around the town. You can discover the Rovitti Palace, from the nineteenth century, with its classic rectangular layout and a uniform façade decorated with windows. Additionally, there are many famous churches, such as the Mother Church, dedicated to the Annunciation and characterised by the bell tower built in the seventeenth century. Then there is the Church of the Madonna del Carmine, the Church of the Madonna degli Infermi, the Church of Santa Lucia and the Church of Sant'Emidio. Finally, do not miss the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Sick, which dates back to the eighteenth century.

Demographic evolution and administration: a welcoming community

From a demographic point of view, the town has gradually developed over the centuries, attracting residents from Calabria and other parts of Italy thanks to its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The territory is now governed by a mayor and his town council, and manages many important economic and social activities.
