Physical geography

Framura extends over a very characteristic area of Liguria, characterized by a rugged coastline and an unspoiled nature. The highest peak of the territory is Mount Serro, which reaches 421 meters above sea level and is part of the protected area of the Cinque Terre. A very important stream for the area is Castagnola, which originates at the foot of Mount San Nicolao and is one of the many rivers that cross the town.

Framura: discovering the scattered municipality of Liguria.

History

The presence of the Ligurians in Framura dates back many centuries. The area was then part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Lombards, and the territory was a possession of the abbey of Saint Colombano. In the Middle Ages, the Framura territory became a fiefdom of the Da Passano family, who left some IX century fortifications as evidence.

In 1170, the Fieschi occupied the castle of Frascario, but the dispute between the Passano lords and the Republic of Genoa then brought the castle into the hands of the Republic. Over the centuries, the fight against the Barbary Pirates pushed the inhabitants of Framura to build three watchtowers.

With the fall of the Genoese Republic, Framura returned to the Department of Vara, the Jurisdiction of Mesco, and the Canton of Deiva Marina. In 1815, it was incorporated into the province of Levante of the Kingdom of Sardinia and then into the Kingdom of Italy. During this period, the territory was included in the VI district of Levanto and, from the establishment of the province of La Spezia, in its jurisdiction.

Tourism

Framura is a small town but offers multiple tourist attractions. The territory, in fact, is ideal for those who want to have fun and relax in the open air. The inlets and coves enchant sea lovers, while excursions on the hills offer incredible views of the Ligurian Sea.

Among the things to see, there are absolutely the three Saracen towers, which are located on the coast and were used as a defense system against the Barbary pirates. Another place to visit is the Church of San Martino, which dates back to the Early Middle Ages and still preserves a Carolingian tower used as a bell tower.

In addition to its natural and architectural treasures, Framura is ideal for those looking for a quiet and authentic vacation, away from the tourist chaos of major cities. The inhabitants of the town are very welcoming and will be happy to show you the local traditions and cuisine.

Cuisine

Speaking of cuisine, we must absolutely mention the local gastronomy, which offers a great variety of products from the sea and the land. Among the most typical dishes are potato focaccette, baccalà alla Framurese, and stoccafissi in umido.

Regarding sea products, local specialties include salted anchovies, stuffed squid, and pickled sardines. You cannot miss trying the Taggiasca olives, olive oil, and wines from the surrounding hills, such as Vermentino.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Framura represents a hidden gem of Liguria, an ideal place for those who want to disconnect from the hectic city life, breathe the air of a true Ligurian village, and immerse themselves in its wonderful natural and cultural treasures. I highly recommend a visit to this splendid town and to let yourself be conquered by the beauty and simplicity of village life.
