Discovering Fragneto L'Abate: history, monuments and places of interest
Fragneto L'Abate is a small Campanian town located in the province of Benevento. With its 958 inhabitants, it is an ideal place for those who want to live away from the chaos of the city and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Italian countryside.
History
The name of the village, like that of neighboring Fragneto Monforte, seems to derive from "Farnitum". This could refer to the oak tree called "farnia", which was present in large quantities in the area during Roman times. During the Norman conquest, the castle Farnitum Totonis was purchased by the Earl of Ariano and donated to the abbot Madelmo of the abbey of Santa Sofia. Since then, the village took the name of "Fragneti Abbatis" and later "Fragneto L'Abate".
The village was part of the province of Principato Ultra for many centuries and, during the reign of the Two Sicilies, was part of the district of Pesco Sannita. Only after the unification of Italy, it was added to the province of Benevento.
