Castagnola

Discovering Castagnola, a Hamlet of Fraconalto

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk about Castagnola, a charming hamlet of Fraconalto located in the province of Alessandria, not too far from Liguria and the Castagnola Pass. Castagnola is situated on a hill overlooking the Traversa river, which flows into the Scrivia river at Borgo Fornari.

The History of Castagnola

The Church of Saints Bernardo Abate and Lorenzo Martire has been known since 1222 as part of the diocese of Tortona but then in 1255, it became part of the Archdiocese of Genoa, to which it still belongs. The village, on the other hand, was founded in 1563 by the Republic of Genoa as a castle, halfway between the road to the Bocchetta Pass and the lower valley road of the Scrivia river.

In 1683, a fire destroyed the church, but it was rebuilt the following year. The hamlet followed the fortunes of the Republic of Genoa and then of Liguria until 1859 when, with the Rattazzi decree, it passed with the entire Novi province from Liguria to Piedmont and to the province of Alessandria.
