Physical geography
Fosciandora is located in an area classified with medium-high seismicity, as established by the PCM ordinance 3274 of 20/03/2003. History

In the 15th century, Fosciandora submitted first to the Republic of Florence and then to Borso d'Este, being part of the Duchy of Ferrara. In the 18th century, Garfagnana came under the jurisdiction of the Cispadane Republic, which in 1799 established the Terra di Fosciandora as an autonomous municipality. During its history, many hamlets were merged or split. In 1847, the entire district of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana passed from the province of Massa-Carrara to the province of Lucca.
